Nuggets News

Welcome back to those of you who have been orienteering in Europe recently. Many of you had some great results, and it was fun to follow so many Nuggets in these competitions online.
If you missed out, don't worry - there is still some great orienteering coming up in Australia over the coming months.
The first event that you need to consider is the Australian Orienteering Championships and National League races.
Entries close on 11th August. Get your entry in now before you forget, and be sure to enter all of the NOL events in either the 17-20E or 21E class.
http://www.oq.asn.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=152&Itemid=187

The 2009 National Orienteering League calendar has been announced, so you can start your 2009 planning.
http://www.orienteering.asn.au/news/?ItemID=3128
I'm not sure about the wisdom of racing in the Adelaide hills in March given that it was over 35 almost every day in March this year. However, it will be the same for everyone and we will no doubt get some practice in those conditions over summer and the xmas 5 days.

O-Tops
I will be ordering new modern, tighter fitting Nuggets o-tops shortly. They will be the same colours as the existing tops, so that you can have a choice of wearing the old or new styles without risking any NOL points. Kampela have sent me sample sizes and I will bring them to events over the coming weeks. Please try these on and give me your order and size if you would like a new top.

SA Sprint Champs and OY event
If you enjoy Cantara Dunes, put Oct 11 and 12 in your diaries. It's only about 6 hours from Melbourne, and less from Ballarat or Bendigo and will offer top class sand dune orienteering.
This is not a NOL event, but it is always great to experience unique and unfamiliar terrain without having to travel to the other side of the world.

Tas NOL Final Information

I trust that you are all fit and well for some good races this weekend.
Here is some final information for you.
Race information:
http://www.orienteering.asn.au/news/gfolder/nationalleague/nol2008/2008NOLRound4-Bulletin3.pdf

Accommodation:
I have arranged accommodation for the following Victoria Nuggets members in St Helens YHA on Fri and Sat nights.
Jim, David, Leon, Bruce, Jasmine, Toph, Morten, Bryan, Ilka, Simon (Blair and Sue - Sat night only)Note: Kathryn (staying with Robbie) and Aislinn (staying with her parents)
The address is:
St Helens YHA5 Cameron StreetSt Helens 7216
Phone: (03) 6376 1661Fax: (03) 6376 2612
Full cooking facilities, lounge room with wood fire, internet access, bedlinen provided. We need our own towels, but I have confirmed that we are allowed to come back and shower after Sunday's races.Jenny Casanova is aiming to get there by dark - leaving Hobart at 2. If anyone gets there earlier they just tell the owner they're with the SA & Vic orienteers. The double rooms are for Sus/Lachlan and Vanessa/Reuben if that's okay, but anywhere else is fair game.
South Aussies will go out for dinner on Sat night so the kitchen is all yours, unless the Nuggets have had the same idea.

Ground Transport:
Bruce, Jim, Toph, David & Leon are sharing a car from Launceston.
Others have made own arrangements. Please keep you car rental receipts and I'll see how much we can get re-imbursed from Orienteering Victoria.

Model area:
Those who wish to do some training in relevant terrain before the NOL races can go to Constable Creek map on Friday 16/5. If not, I have a computer simulation of this on Catching Features that I will bring for you to try on Friday evening.
On Saturday morning ONLY, part of the Littlechild Creek map will be available as a model map! Copies will be available at the assembly area from 9.00am. The track onto the map section is 1.5 km back toward St Helens from the track into the NOL assembly area. It is a major logging road.

Tassie NOL Accommodation

Jenny Casanova has kindly booked accommodation at St Helens together with the Southern Arrows for Fri and Sat nights.

We have space for 11-12 VIC people:
Yes
Jim
David
Leon
Bruce
Kathryn (staying with Robbie?)
Jasmine
Toph
Morten
Bryan
(Blair - Sat night only)
Ilka
Simon

Maybe
Louise?
Max?
Todd?

Aislinn - staying with her parents
Evan?? stress facture - probably not going

8 SA runners + Liggo (9), leaving 11 beds for us.

From Jenny Casanova:
"There are 2 dorm rooms with 6 and 8 beds each plus 2 smaller rooms with a double and single (bunk) in each; so we can fit up to 20 people, in which case it would be $20/person/night.
By my calculations there will be 8 from SA, but there’s plenty of floor space if Vic ends up with more than 12. Full cooking facilities, lounge room with wood fire, internet access, bedlinen provided.
We need our own towels, but I have confirmed that we are allowed to come back and shower after Sunday’s races.
The address is 5 Cameron St, it’s close to the centre of town. "

We will organise some hire cars closer to the time.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks to you all for another great effort over the weekend. There was certainly some fun and exciting racing.

As mentioned before, we have some funding available for last weekend. We have already paid your entry fee, but there is some left over for transport and accommodation.
Please send me your claim for any accommodation (Fri & Sat night) or transport expenses by Fri 11th April.

Easter info

If you have one of the Garmin GPS units, please bring this along to Easter with you. I encourage you to wear it, however if you don't, please offer it someone else from the team below.

I will have my laptop preloaded with map scans (from last year) for any analysis that you or your coach may wish to do after your races. Who knows - you may learn something important from day 1 that you can apply on days 2 and 3!

I understand that Kathryn, Bryan, Leon, Toph and Bruce have the 5 Orienteering Victoria units, and that Jim and Adam have their own.

I now have 3 more brand new Garmin units (courtesy of the OV Athlete Development grant). I will bring these along for the first 3 people that respond to me today.

Have a safe trip to Dubbo, and remember to register at 10am Friday in Dubbo before getting to the zoo by 11am.

We could have a team dinner on one of the nights at the Dubbo RSL to celebrate our NOL wins last year? Perhaps pencil in Friday evening at 6:30pm, and we can confirm this after the Prologue.

March update

Great work on the weekend. We lead junior women, junior men, senior women and are third in senior men.
Fantastic results by Kathryn Ewels and Bryan Keely in particular. Well done!
Just a reminder that if you are good enough to get on the podium, please wear your state top for the presentation (even if it smells). It looks much better for photos and sponsors. From Sunday, the senior men's photo is the only one published on the OA website, as the winners in the other classes didn't have their team shirts on. If you want to get your photo published on magazines and websites, then please support the organisations that assist you.

I'm entering all races for the team for the Canberra NOLs later this week.
Preliminary mixed relay teams will be:
Open
Kathryn and Bruce
Jasmine and Toph
Kirsten and Jim
Clare and Blair
Sophie and Aaron
Junior
Aislinn and Bryan
Jasmine and Morten
Rebekah and Leon
Max and Todd*
Changes will be made if necessary after Easter.
(Rebekah will not run NOL on the Sunday.)
Orienteering Victoria will pay entry fees, but will then subtract this from any travel and accommodation expenses that you claim.
This is the final call for anyone else who wants to enter. The entries will be sent this Friday.

Lastly, Kathryn is keen to do some sprint distance training in Melbourne this Saturday. Please get in touch with her if you wish to join her. She may be able to pass on some of her winning secrets!

By the way, a few people are still using my old mobile number, so if you haven't done so, please update your address books.
Many thanks
