Many of you had some great results, and it was fun to follow so many Nuggets in these competitions online.
If you missed out, don't worry - there is still some great orienteering coming up in Australia over the coming months.
The first event that you need to consider is the Australian Orienteering Championships and National League races.
Entries close on 11th August. Get your entry in now before you forget, and be sure to enter all of the NOL events in either the 17-20E or 21E class.
http://www.oq.asn.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=152&Itemid=187

The 2009 National Orienteering League calendar has been announced, so you can start your 2009 planning.
http://www.orienteering.asn.au/news/?ItemID=3128
I'm not sure about the wisdom of racing in the Adelaide hills in March given that it was over 35 almost every day in March this year. However, it will be the same for everyone and we will no doubt get some practice in those conditions over summer and the xmas 5 days.

O-Tops
I will be ordering new modern, tighter fitting Nuggets o-tops shortly. They will be the same colours as the existing tops, so that you can have a choice of wearing the old or new styles without risking any NOL points. Kampela have sent me sample sizes and I will bring them to events over the coming weeks. Please try these on and give me your order and size if you would like a new top.

SA Sprint Champs and OY event
If you enjoy Cantara Dunes, put Oct 11 and 12 in your diaries. It's only about 6 hours from Melbourne, and less from Ballarat or Bendigo and will offer top class sand dune orienteering.
This is not a NOL event, but it is always great to experience unique and unfamiliar terrain without having to travel to the other side of the world.

Tas NOL Final Information

I trust that you are all fit and well for some good races this weekend.
Here is some final information for you.
Race information:
http://www.orienteering.asn.au/news/gfolder/nationalleague/nol2008/2008NOLRound4-Bulletin3.pdf

Accommodation:
I have arranged accommodation for the following Victoria Nuggets members in St Helens YHA on Fri and Sat nights.
Jim, David, Leon, Bruce, Jasmine, Toph, Morten, Bryan, Ilka, Simon (Blair and Sue - Sat night only)Note: Kathryn (staying with Robbie) and Aislinn (staying with her parents)
The address is:
St Helens YHA5 Cameron StreetSt Helens 7216
Phone: (03) 6376 1661Fax: (03) 6376 2612
Full cooking facilities, lounge room with wood fire, internet access, bedlinen provided. We need our own towels, but I have confirmed that we are allowed to come back and shower after Sunday's races.Jenny Casanova is aiming to get there by dark - leaving Hobart at 2. The double rooms are for Sus/Lachlan and Vanessa/Reuben if that's okay, but anywhere else is fair game.
South Aussies will go out for dinner on Sat night so the kitchen is all yours, unless the Nuggets have had the same idea.

Ground Transport:
Bruce, Jim, Toph, David & Leon are sharing a car from Launceston.
Others have made own arrangements. Please keep you car rental receipts and I'll see how much we can get re-imbursed from Orienteering Victoria.

Model area:
Those who wish to do some training in relevant terrain before the NOL races can go to Constable Creek map on Friday 16/5. If not, I have a computer simulation of this on Catching Features that I will bring for you to try on Friday evening.
On Saturday morning ONLY, part of the Littlechild Creek map will be available as a model map! Copies will be available at the assembly area from 9.00am. The track onto the map section is 1.5 km back toward St Helens from the track into the NOL assembly area. Perhaps pencil in Friday evening at 6:30pm, and we can confirm this after the Prologue.

Our teams for Easter

M21E
Bruce Arthur
Evan Barr
Aaron Dodd
Simon Goddard
Christopher Naunton
Jim Russell
Blair Trewin
Adam Scammell

W21E
Sophie Barker
Ilka Barr
Clare Brownridge
Kathryn Ewels
Kirsten Fairfax
Louise Fairfax
Yelena Fairfax
Jasmine Neve
Zoe Radford

M20E
Bryan Keely
Leon Keely
Max Neve
Morten Neve
Todd Neve
James Robertson

W20E
Aislinn Prendergast
Jasmine Sunley

Good luck.

March update

Great work on the weekend. We lead junior women, junior men, senior women and are third in senior men.
Fantastic results by Kathryn Ewels and Bryan Keely in particular. Well done!
Just a reminder that if you are good enough to get on the podium, please wear your state top for the presentation (even if it smells). It looks much better for photos and sponsors. From Sunday, the senior men's photo is the only one published on the OA website, as the winners in the other classes didn't have their team shirts on. If you want to get your photo published on magazines and websites, then please support the organisations that assist you.

I'm entering all races for the team for the Canberra NOLs later this week.
Preliminary mixed relay teams will be:
Open
Kathryn and Bruce
Jasmine and Toph
Kirsten and Jim
Clare and Blair
Sophie and Aaron
Junior
Aislinn and Bryan
Jasmine and Morten
Rebekah and Leon
Max and Todd*
Changes will be made if necessary after Easter.
(Rebekah will not run NOL on the Sunday.)
Orienteering Victoria will pay entry fees, but will then subtract this from any travel and accommodation expenses that you claim.
This is the final call for anyone else who wants to enter. The entries will be sent this Friday.

Lastly, Kathryn is keen to do some sprint distance training in Melbourne this Saturday. Please get in touch with her if you wish to join her. I have set a sprint-course for the morning for which you need to arrive by 10.30. Starts will be from 11am, and we will be starting at 1 min time intervals. This is a good chance to practice your orienteering under race conditions. In the afternoon I have organised a star-relay, which will have 4 loops. We will have a mass start at 2pm for this race, and you can select to do between 2 and 4 loops. There will also be a beginners course in the afternoon. The start and finish area will be by the dam at Smith's Reef, so if it is a hot day bring your swimmers! Also bring plenty of water with you if it is a hot day. We will have some there, but we have set short courses, with loops passing through the finish so there will be no water on the course.
Directions. >From Castlemaine: “From the intersection of the Midland Highway, (A300) and the Pyrenees Highway (B180) (traffic lights) in the centre of Castlemaine, head South towards Ballarat on the (A300). After 1.1kms turn right and head towards Maryborough on the (B180) for 3.6kms. Turn right onto the Maldon Road. Smiths Reef Forest is approximately 8kms along this road on the right. Follow O signs.

Weekend March 24-25

The plan this weekend for our group (Bryan, Leon, Jimbo and me) was to have a bit of a mini Easter with 3 races within almost 24hrs. I will be bringing our stock of uniforms to the Easter training day on March 31 for anyone who wishes to purchase new uniforms. Tops $35, Pants $25. The terrain was fast, open spur gully (much like Eppalock), but competitors had to battle 28 degree temperatures on up to 15km courses.

In the individual National Orienteering League standings, Bruce Arthur has consolidated 7th place, with Jackson 9th and Blair Trewin 10th. I think everyone had a least one good result over the weekend. I hope that you all enjoyed the trip and are now motivated to keep training hard for the Australian Championships.

Blair has been busy on the computer, and has already calculated the updated NOL points. The good news is that we have left TAS Foresters in our dust and are now in third place and within reach of NSW Stingers. Our goal for the remainder of the year is to catch and pass the Stingers for second. The juniors have been overtaken by QLD Cyclones, but are still close enough to give the title a challenge in WA.

While the weekend is still fresh in your minds, can someone please volunteer to write a short report on weekend for the O-Vic magazine? Orienteering Victoria gave us good support for this event so it would be great to be able to tell the members all about it. Any good photos would be useful too.

I'm hoping to be able to get the weekend's transport and accommodation expenses covered by OV from our remaining 2006 NOL budget. Can Jim, Blair and Paul let me know their final car, petrol & accommodation expenses, and I'll arrange to get Ruth Goddard to re-imburse you? I'll also arrange for the selected team member's funding to be forwarded to you as soon as the expenses are finalised.

I look forward to seeing most of you at Kooyoora next weekend. The perpetual Victoria Nuggets Kooyoora Challenge awards will be up for grabs based on cumulative times over the 2 days on course 1 (M21) and course 3 (W21).

South Australian Long Distance Championship

The South Australian Long Distance Championship was held on new map called Ngaralta Country near Murray Bridge. Teams of 2-5 members visit as many controls as possible in the time available. Teams must stay together to visit as many controls as possible in the 3 hours. Controls are worth varying points, taking into account difficulty of navigation and distance travelled.
Map and Area Whroo: 1:15.000, 5 metre contours, full colour. First used in 2001 for the Victorian Championships. Whroo presents a diverse set of technical challenges, most of the forest is open and easy to move through, but the complicated gully/spur terrain offers ample scope for the feet to move faster than the brain. Pockets of old gold workings, which require close attention to map detail, complement the other challenges.
Entry Information Complete entry form and send with cheque to address on entry form. So far we have no confirmed entries for the Australian or New Zealand teams. The organisers are aiming to identify all Elite runners by state and (where appropriate) by country, with a separate set of results for the Australia/NZ Challenge. Please note that start times for elite races and the course structures have been set to maximise the spectator appeal of the races, for those who rarely come into contact with the elite competition.

During this week I expect to update the course lengths with full details of climb as the courses are almost finalised.

The model map, Charlie Hart Creek west of Hunter’s Hut Road is now on the web under “location/maps and terrain”. Competitors will be allowed to run on this map but must recognise that all of the areas to the east of the Hunter’s Hut Road will be embargoed.

On the Saturday night there will be a Trivia Night in Maryborough. In a mass start, the pack took a longer route choice, with Paul Liggins going on his own and taking an early lead. He was then caught by the pack at 3, and there were 6 leaders running together through to the end of the first map.

Adam Scammell came to the front and led briefly at the Chandler Highway bridge at just under half distance. However with the most physical and technically demanding forest to come, he was always going to find it hard to hold on. Juniors Bryan and Leon Keely were looking good but would be tested in the second half by the experienced Warren Key, Jim Russell and Paul Liggins.

Liggins hit the front with 2km to go, but a poor route choice brought him back to the pack. Five were left together for the last kilometre. Everyone hesitated at the base of the large quarry for around 15 seconds. No one wanted to commit to going left, right or straight up the cliff. Eventually Key chose wisely and headed left and took a small lead.
Key, Russell and the Keely brothers all punched together at the last control, but Bryan won the sprint to take out the race.

Warren's entry for the oldest Orienteering T-Shirt competition.

1 Bryan Keely BG 0:54:55
2 Warren Key MF 0:54:56
3 Leon Keely BG 0:54:57
4 Jim Russell BG 0:54:58
5 Paul Liggins MF 0:55:20
6 Adam Scammell BK 0:59:20
7 David Brownridge BG 1:01:53
8 Andrew Baker BK 1:04:47
9 Ian Dodd DR 1:06:00
10 Thomas Top YV 1:06:44

QLD NOL Bulletin #2

Queensland Championships NOL Bulletin 2.
As you know the next rounds of the NOL are coincidental with the Queensland Championships to take place near Maryborough over the weekend of 19 and 20 August. Enoggeroos are the organising club.
On line entry and full information is now available is available at www.qoa.asn.au/champs

Day 1 will take place on Hunter’s Hut which has been mapped by Geoff Peck. This day will consist of the Queensland Middle Distance Championships. The map is very gentle and quite clear spur gully country where some competitors will run very fast times and others will regret going too fast and making big mistakes. NOL starts are set to take place from 1pm to allow for travel from Brisbane. JNOL and NOL courses are the same enabling juniors to count for both competitions. Catering has been arranged to encourage runners to compete, eat and relax. The Saturday evening will see a Trevor Sauer Trivia night (in Maryborough) with presentations for the Middle Distance Championships. Day 2 is scheduled to commence for NOL at 10am with Classic length loop courses for M/W21 and M/W17-20. The JNOL courses will not be the same as the NOL courses and therefore JNOL entrants will only count for JNOL points. The map is Graveyard Creek which is similar to Hunter’s Hut but has more rock detail and some evidence of erosion features. Fast times are still expected. Presentations for NOL are expected to commence at 12.30 to allow time for travel back to Brisbane.

The first entries have been received from, Ben Rattray and John Nieuwenhoven (both from South Australia), both successfully used the on-line entry and the direct payment to Heritage. Their details appear on the web, as payments have been confirmed.

The web site has a section called “About Maryborough” which gives a brief history of the town and region and contains links about the area and other links to accommodation. In the last week one of the local motels contacted us with the following information which has been loaded to the web.
“The Arkana Motel is part of the Golden Chain group of motels and is ideally suited for your accommodation needs. They would like to offer competitors a 10% discount on rates - and possibly more discounts for groups. Spectator opportunities will therefore remain high although this format has meant that JNOL runners cannot also count for NOL because the courses for 17 - 20s will be different to those of their 21s counterparts. Vacant spots have also been taken out of the start list.

NOL 3 Long, has had some minor changes so that some of the better runners will not be starting together.

The new start lists are now up on the competition web pages. Can you spread the news amongst your athletes that new start lists are out. Hopefully it won't cause too much confusion, the changes for the first race are only minor. If anyone doesn't find out before the race day the word should spread at the race and they will check the new list.

Grant Bluett

Saturday's race details and start times
http://westernhills.nsw.orienteering.asn.au/11mar2006.htm

Sunday's race details
http://www.southernhighlands.nsw.orienteering.asn.au/Documents/SL2_2006_Info_sheet.htm
start times
http://www.southernhighlands.nsw.orienteering.asn.au/Documents/SartListSL2_06.htm

It is likely to be hot, possibly very hot for the time of year. Sunday looks the worse of the two days, but the area is at a higher elevation and we have an earlier start. At this stage I'd expect maximum temperatures at the venues in the low 30s on both days, but mid 30s are not out of the question. Sunday (which could be quite windy) also has a fairly good chance of being a total fire ban day, but that doesn't result in event cancellations in NSW so the event will go ahead regardless (unless the area is on fire :-)
My recollection is that there isn't much in the way of food and/or eating places at Wyangala (a small general store, and a pub which may or may not have decent food). Nor are there any shops anywhere near the farm for those who are staying there. My advice is to pick up anything you think you'll need on the way up on Friday.
The info sheet suggests that Saturday's area (which appears to be on the other side of the road from the Australian Relays) has more forest on it than the relay area did, but it still looks pretty quick.

Blair

Beechworth this weekend

Hello Guys,

Here is how the weekend is panning out, we shall meet at the river crossing on the Kangaroo Crossing map at 11.30 for a 12.00 start.
After having lunch at the Bakery, we will go out to Baramboogie for our second exercise.

Return to Beechworth to overnight accommodation.

Sunday morning, the 1st exercise will be using the Beechworth map,
After having a late breakfast, we will return to Kangaroo Crossing for the 2nd run of the day

Have a wash in the river and return home soon after lunch.

Accommodation

I have not booked anything, there are a couple of Caravan parks in Beechworth,
lakesambell@bigpond.com
