Easter Training Day - Smith's Reef

We have something a bit different organised for this weekend. I have set a sprint-course for the morning for which you need to arrive by 10.30. Starts will be from 11am, and we will be starting at 1 min time intervals. This is a good chance to practice your orienteering under race conditions. In the afternoon I have organised a star-relay, which will have 4 loops. We will have a mass start at 2pm for this race, and you can select to do between 2 and 4 loops. There will also be a beginners course in the afternoon. The start and finish area will be by the dam at Smith's Reef, so if it is a hot day bring your swimmers! Also bring plenty of water with you if it is a hot day. We will have some there, but we have set short courses, with loops passing through the finish so there will be no water on the course.
Directions. >From Castlemaine: “From the intersection of the Midland Highway, (A300) and the Pyrenees Highway (B180) (traffic lights) in the centre of Castlemaine, head South towards Ballarat on the (A300). After 1.1kms turn right and head towards Maryborough on the (B180) for 3.6kms. Turn right onto the Maldon Road. Smiths Reef Forest is approximately 8kms along this road on the right. Follow O signs.

Weekend March 24-25

The plan this weekend for our group (Bryan, Leon, Jimbo and me) was to have a bit of a mini Easter with 3 races within almost 24hrs. The purpose of these trainings is to work on racing and technical skills of orienteering, although these terrains maybe a little more techncial than those you find at Easter in Burra they are skills you will always need as a successfull orienteer. It's also a good time to get into your own race procedures so its not unfamiliar come 2weeks.

Saturday, March 24th, CHEWTON DIGGINGS

Am: Meet up 10:30am sharp @ Chewton shops (it's on the road into Castlemaine from Melb.) then driving 5mins to the diggings wheel.
Sprint (race 1): 2.5km (10-15 min) sprint course around technical Chewton Diggings area.

Pm: 2pm start @ diggings wheel.
Middle (race 2): 5km (30-35min) middle course around technical/and some not so technical Chewton Diggings area.

Sunday, March 25th, BLOWMINE

Am: Meet up 10am sharp @ Castlemaine Park (centre town, cnr forest/barker st) then driving out to Blowmine map in Newstead.
Long (race 3): 12km + (80-90min) longer course around fairly fast "Burra like" terrain on Blowmine map.

All welcome to join us!

If you do decide to come YOU MUST PHONE ME A.S.A.P. and tell me what sessions your interested in, so we can organise you with map and fit you in.

Boring but important

Uniforms
Victoria Nuggets uniforms are again compulsory this season for all M/W21E competitors. Penalty points are applied if we do not wear these in all NOL competitions. Please make sure you take some washing powder with you to Easter so that you can wear your uniform each day. I will be bringing our stock of uniforms to the Easter training day on March 31 for anyone who wishes to purchase new uniforms. Tops $35, Pants $25. Pants or tights must be predominantly navy (and must not have "Australia" written on them). Shorts or bike pants can be worn for sprint races.

NOL Entries
Entries for NOL events always close 4 weeks before the event. This means that you need to go to the OA NOL web pages to get your entries in for rounds 2 (VIC) and 3(NSW) of the NOL now. Late entry fees will apply and entry can not be guaranteed if you don't.

2006 Funding
Reasonable accommodation and petrol expenses will be refunded for NOL athletes starting all races on the weekend after Easter in SA, and the JWOC trials in NSW. Please keep your receipts and forward them to Bruce for your re-imbursement from Orienteering Victoria.
